TEHRAN University students who are supporters of the Daftar-e Tahkim-e Vahdat (office for consolidation of unity) staged a rally in Tehran on Monday to celebrate the anniversary of takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979 in protest to the U.S. interference in the internal affairs of Iran and its firm support for the deposed Shah by having organized a military coup in 1953 against the then legitimate government of Iran led by Mohammad Mosaddeq. The deposed Shah had fled the country in 1953 but was reinstated through the U.S.-led military coup.

Since 1953, the U.S. had maintained a strong presence on the Iranian political scene through direct interference in the routine performance of the Iranian government under the Shah. The Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979 put an end to the U.S. domination over the Iranian domestic affairs. Various organizations and institutions, in separate statements on Monday, called on the nation, youth and university students in particular, to attend the November 4 rallies to be held Monday afternoon.

November 4 marks anniversary of three major events in Iran; takeover of the U.S. Den of Espionage, the former American Embassy in Tehran by students following the line of Imam Khomeini in 1979, the anniversary of the late Imam Khomeini's exile to Turkey in 1963 and Student's Day. The Islamic Propagation Organization (IPO), Islamic Revolution's Guard Corps (IRGC), Ideo-Political Organization of the Defense Ministry, Medical Disciplinary Board, Islamic Association of Tehran and the medical sciences universities, Martyr Foundation, and the Islamic Revolution's Mujahedeen Organization issued separate statements calling on people to attend the rallies.
